• Welcome to RoboMontreal!

    Montreal's Robotics Community

    Who We Are

RoboMontreal is a club for robotics enthusiasts from the Montreal area. RoboMontreal has monthly meetings (see the little box to the right), hosts a robot racing team (team NORM), and has a forum.

The goal of RoboMontreal is to collect local resources and expertise into one place, stimulating the robotics community in Montreal.

RoboMontreal is an informal club, and is open to anyone who's interested in robots. Drop us a line!

Here's Part 3 of our 3 part video on the 2008 Robot Racing Competition: The Main Race! Of the 10 robots that registered, 8 showed up, 4 qualified, and 3 completed all 4 laps of the main race. We were one of them!

The racing team returned from its Waterloo road trip yesterday - and what a trip it was! We finalized our navigation algorithm on the car ride out, tweaked the control parameters the morning of the race, and added some speed control and camera tuning features during the event! And guess what: it worked! Of 8 entries, ours was one of only 3 to complete the race. It was a beautiful thing to see!

Even though we didn't win the race, we consider this an overwhelming success. The robot was controlled, if cautious, the vision system worked well, the platform was flexible enough for last-minute changes, and, most importantly, we showed that our approach is viable. All we really need to do for next year is tune and improve what we've already got working!

Thanks to everyone who helped work on the robot over the past year, and a big shout out to our new friends from UBC Thunderbird Robotics, who seem to share our passion for both robotics and refreshing barley-based beverages. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year!

The RoboMontreal Robot Racing team is working hard to finish up our robot for this year's competition on April 27th. This year's robot's named Nostradamnus, and if all goes well, will include a bank of IR sensors and a camera + FPGA system developped specifically for pylon detection.

RoboMontreal has been featured in Snap Magazine! Snap is a new Montreal Arts & Lifestyle magazine. The November issue is available online at www.snapme.ca. Warning: there's some adults-only material on the site. The article on RoboMontreal is all clean, though, and is about 11 pages into the November issue. Fame & fortune, here we come! ; )

Robot Racing was a blast! Three of Team N.O.R.M.'s members drove out to Waterloo this past weekend, representing Montreal in what I personally consider to be the most promising robotics event out there in terms of innovation and accessibility. I'm putting together a series of videos of our trip. Here's Part I: Build. I hope you enjoy!

I've just posted a mega-update to the forum. A quick summary: RobotRacing is this Friday, ECRG is May 5th, WCRG is May 12th, and our next meeting is pushed back to May 16th.

With Robot Racing done, we'll be looking for new group projects. Post your ideas in the forum.

We're also thinking of events to hold locally - post your craziest ideas in the forum!

We hit #4 on a Google search for "Montreal Robotics". This is really, really cool!

Finally, congratulations to those who participated in CRAC, 2007!

Go check out the forum for more details on all this....
